Macbeth on Shakespearen kirjoittama tragedia. Se on yksi hänen kuuluisimpia ja julmempia näytelmiään. Näytelmä kertoo skotlantilaisesta sotapäälliköstä Macbethista, joka kunnianhimonsa ja vaimonsa Lady Macbethin yllytyksestä murhaa kuningas Duncanin. Ja nousee itse valtaistuimelle. Vallanhimossaan ja vainoharhaisuudessaan Macbeth surmaa useita muitakin vastustajiaan. Eero Aho tekee uskomattoman hienon roolin.

Ennen teatterinäytöstä tunsin huonosti Macbethin tarinan ja lähdin sitä melkein tyhjältä pöydältä katsomaan. Yllätyin, kun en muistanutkaan, että molemmat Macbethit sekä Lady että Kuningas tunsivat hirveää syyllisyyttä teoistaan. Mutta toisaalta heidän keskinäinen suhteensa sai polttoainetta kunnianhimosta ja väkivallasta. He siis uhrasivat moraalinsa.

Shakespeare oli kielenkäytössään nero. Suuri William Shakespearen ihailija, Ralph Långbacka, on todennut Shakespearen ilmaisun olevan niin hypnoottisen vahvaa, että jopa käännöksiin saadaan Shakespearen kielen magiikkaa. Näytelmän hieno suomennos on Matti Rossin käsialaa. Upeat näyttelijät saavat Shakespearen tekstin elämään.

Birnamin metsä on keskeinen symboli Macbeth-näytelmässä. Näytelmän alussa noidat ennustavat Macbethille, että hän pysyy vallassa, kunnes Birnamin metsä liikkuu Macbethin linnalle, Dunsinane kukkulalle asti. Macbeth pitää tätä mahdottomana!
